Biofuel is a special kind of energy made from biomass.

Types and generation of biofuels

Biomass is organic material like plants, wood, or even waste. This is different from fossil fuels like oil. Fossil fuels take a very long time to form deep underground. Biofuel can be made over a much shorter time.

Most biofuels are used for transport. They can also provide heat or electricity. Many people call them renewable because they come from living things.

There are two main ways these fuels work. The first is bioethanol, which is an alcohol.

It is made through fermentation. This is a process where tiny living things change sugars or starches into alcohol. For example, workers might use corn or sugarcane to make it. The second type is biodiesel.

Biodiesel

This is made from oils or fats using a process called transesterification. This turns the oils into a liquid that looks like regular diesel.

Scientists and leaders study how these fuels affect our world. Some people worry about the "food vs fuel" debate. This happens when land is used for fuel instead of food.

Using land for fuel can also lead to deforestation. This means cutting down forests, which can hurt nature. However, biofuels can be good for the air. When burned, they often emit fewer greenhouse gases. This is because the plants took carbon from the air while they grew.

Different parts of the world produce different fuels. The United States is the largest producer of bioethanol.

The European Union is the largest producer of biodiesel. In 2021, ethanol production used 20% of the world's sugar and 13% of corn. Global demand for biofuel is expected to grow by 56% between 2022 and 2027. By 2027, biofuel might supply 5.4% of the world's transport fuels. This includes about 1% of the fuel used for flying planes.

Biofuel connects to the way we move every day. You might see ethanol mixed with gasoline in a car.

Biodiesel can be used in many diesel engines too. Some engines can run on pure biodiesel, called B100. Others use a blend, like the 5% or 8% blends used in Europe. Some experts say we should use biofuel for big jobs. These are things that are hard to run on electricity, like large ships or airplanes.
