geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Binzhou is a large city in northern Shandong Province, China. It sits on the northern bank of the Yellow River. The city area spreads across both sides of the river's lower course. This land is part of a flat plain made of silt. The river carries this silt down to the land. Over a very long time, this process created the ground here.

The map shows how the city sits near the Bay of Bohai. It borders places like Dezhou, Jinan, and Zibo.

The weather in Binzhou changes with four clear seasons. It is one of the warmest cities with this type of climate. In the summer, it is hot and humid. Temperatures can reach as high as 31 °C. Spring is warm but has very little rain. Autumn feels crisp and cool to the touch. Winters are cold and dry, and snow sometimes falls. Most of the rain comes in July and August.

People have lived in this area for a very long time. Some records show people lived here during the Neolithic period. Long ago, a group called the Pugu lived in this land. They were part of the "Eastern Barbarians" known as the Dongyi. Later, the land became part of the Qi state. The name Binzhou started during the Five Dynasties period. Back then, the land sat right next to the Bay of Bohai.

Many people call Binzhou home today. In 2020, the census counted 3,928,568 people living there. The city has many different parts to manage. These include two districts and several counties like Wudi and Yangxin. The city is famous for its "dongzao," or winter dates. Other areas are known for making kitchenware or working with oil. The Shengli Oil Field is a major source of oil nearby.

Binzhou works hard to grow its economy and help its people. Many people work in big industries like textiles and chemicals. There are also large companies like Weiqiao Textile. The city is also growing its service industry. This means more jobs in things like modern services. In 2004, the city started a special way to talk to villagers. This is called Democratic Political Discussion Day. It happens on the 5th of every month. Villagers can meet to talk about how money is spent. They can even vote on important local issues. This helps make the government more open to everyone.
