The city is made of many different parts. It manages eight smaller areas like districts and counties. These include Dongchangfu District and Chiping District. It also manages Linqing City and five other counties. Many people live in these areas. In 2010, the population was 5,789,863 people. About 1,229,768 of those people lived in the built-up area of Dongchangfu. Most of the rest of the city is still rural land.

Liaocheng has a very long history that goes back many centuries. Long ago, during the Spring and Autumn period, it was part of the State of Qi. Back then, it was known as Liaocheng Town. The modern city keeps this ancient name today. During the Qin dynasty, it became Liaocheng County. Many different ruling groups changed the name of the area over time. In the year 992, the seat of the county moved to the site of the present city.

Many interesting landmarks can be found throughout the city. You can visit the Shanxi-Shaanxi Assembly Hall. Another special place is the Linqing Mosque. There is also a place called the Iron Tower Lion Building. Legend says a man named Wu Song fought a man named Ximen Qing there. You can also see the Guangyue Tower. These sites help show the history of the region.

Traveling to and from Liaocheng is quite easy for visitors. The city has a main railway station for trains. There is also a station for the high-speed network called Liaocheng West. This helps people travel quickly to other parts of China. Liaocheng is also connected to the world through sister cities. It has partnerships with cities in South Korea, Australia, and Russia. It even has a partnership with a district in Germany.
