The geography of Billings is defined by the Yellowstone Valley. This valley is a canyon carved out by the Yellowstone River.

The canyon walls are known as the Billings Rimrocks, or the Rims. These geological features were formed through a long process involving ancient seas. Approximately 80 million years ago, the area sat on the shore of the Western Interior Seaway. The sea deposited thick layers of sand and sediment along the shoreline. As the sea retreated, it left behind deep layers of sand. Over millions of years, pressure compressed this sand into a stone called Eagle Sandstone.

For the last million years, the river has cut through this stone to create the canyon walls.

Human history in this region stretches back thousands of years. The Pictograph Caves sit about five miles south of the downtown area.

These caves contain over 100 pictographs, which are ancient rock paintings. The oldest of these paintings is more than 2,000 years old. Archaeologists have excavated approximately 30,000 artifacts from the site, including stone tools and weapons. These finds show that people occupied the area from at least 2600 BC until after AD 1800. The Crow people have also called this area home since about 1700.

Nearby, the Cheyenne and Gros Ventre peoples also have names for the area. These names often refer to a sawmill built by early settlers.

In 1806, William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition passed through the region.

On July 25, he reached a large rock that he named Pompey's Tower. He named it after Pompey, the son of Sacajawea, his Shoshone guide. Clark carved his name and the date into the rock. This remains the only physical evidence of their expedition. In 1965, the site became a national historic landmark. It was later proclaimed a national monument in 2001.

Before Billings existed, a town called Coulson sat on the Yellowstone River.

Settlers formed Coulson in 1877 to act as a hub for hauling freight. It was a rough town known for saloons and dance halls. The famous mountain man John "Liver-Eating" Johnson served as a lawman there. The town even had a graveyard called Boothill Cemetery. Most people buried there were said to have died with their boots on.

However, the arrival of the railroad changed everything. The Northern Pacific Railroad chose to build a new town two miles west of Coulson. This new town was named Billings after Frederick H. Billings. He was a former president of the Northern Pacific Railroad.

Billings grew so fast that it earned the nickname "Magic City." Most residents from Coulson eventually moved to the booming new town. By the 1930s, the town of Coulson had almost entirely disappeared.

The 20th century brought massive economic shifts to Billings. The city became an energy hub following the discovery of oil, natural gas, and coal.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Billings saw significant urban development. This era saw the construction of many high-rise buildings in the downtown core.
