In the summer, temperatures can rise above 45 degrees Celsius. During the winter, it can get quite cold and drop below freezing. Rain is very rare and usually only falls for a few hours each year.

The history of the city began a long time ago. Before the mid-15th century, the land was a barren wilderness called Jangladesh. A Rajput chief named Rao Bika founded the city in 1488. The name Bikaner means "the city of Bika" in the local language. Bika wanted to build his own kingdom rather than inherit Jodhpur. He chose this area because it had spring water. This made the city an oasis on a trade path. This path connected Central Asia to the Gujarat coast.

Many powerful rulers helped build the city over the years. Raja Rai Singh built the Junagarh Fort around 1594. This fort is special because it sits on flat land. Most other major forts in Rajasthan are built on hills.
