The city has a very old story. A king named Ajaydeva founded the city long ago. He named it "Ajaya Meru," which means "invincible hill" in Sanskrit. This name refers to the Taragarh Hill where the city sits.

There is a huge fort on this hill called Taragarh Fort. Some say it is the oldest hill fort in India. It stands 2,855 feet above sea level.

Many different groups have ruled Ajmer over the years. Chahamana kings ruled it as their capital until the 12th century. Later, the Mughal Empire took control in 1556 under Emperor Akbar. The Mughals liked the city very much. They built beautiful things like Akbar's palace near the water.
