The Big Mac is a famous hamburger from McDonald's. It is known as the company's flagship product. This means it is one of their most important items. People all over the world recognize this sandwich. It is even used as a tool to compare costs in different countries. This tool is called the Big Mac Index.

Making a Big Mac follows a specific set of steps. It uses a bun with three slices of bread. The top slice is covered in sesame seeds. Inside, you will find two beef patties. There is also one slice of American cheese. To add more flavor, it includes shredded lettuce and minced onions. Two slices of dill pickles are added too. Finally, it gets a special sauce that is like Thousand Island dressing.

This sandwich has an interesting history. A man named Jim Delligatti helped create it in 1967. He ran several McDonald's restaurants in the Pittsburgh area. He first sold it in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. He wanted to compete with a different burger called the Big Boy. The burger had two other names before it became the Big Mac. Those names were the Aristocrat and the Blue Ribbon Burger. An advertising secretary named Esther Glickstein Rose chose the final name.

Many facts about the Big Mac are quite surprising. In the United States, about 560 million are sold every year. That is about 17 burgers every single second. McDonald's also used fun characters to sell it. One character was Officer Big Mac, a policeman with a sandwich for a head. There is even a Big Mac Museum in Pennsylvania. It features a statue that is 14 feet high and 12 feet wide.

The Big Mac changes depending on where you live. In India, it is called the Maharaja Mac. Since beef is not eaten in most of India, it uses chicken. In Japan, you can find a Giga Big Mac with three times the meat. There is also a Mega Tamago Mac with a fried egg and bacon. In Australia, you can buy just the sauce in a small cup. These different versions show how the burger fits into many different cultures.
