Today, the library is a place where people gather to learn and share ideas. It serves as a bridge between the history of the past and the technology of the future.

Inside the building, the reading room is a grand space with eleven levels. It sits beneath a huge glass roof that is 32 meters high. This roof is tilted toward the sea like a sundial. The roof measures about 160 meters in diameter. The walls are made of gray granite. They are carved with characters from 120 different scripts.

The library has room for eight million books. It also has many other special places. There is a planetarium and a center for conferences. There are also museums and galleries for art.

Building this center was a long and careful project. The idea to bring back the library began in 1974. A committee from Alexandria University chose a spot near the sea. This spot was close to where the ancient library once stood. In 1988, UNESCO held a contest to find a design. A Norwegian office named Snøhetta won the contest. They beat 524 other entries to win.

Construction began in 1995 and cost a lot of money. Most of the early funding came from states in the MENA region.

There are many specific collections within the walls. The Taha Hussein Library helps people who are blind or visually impaired. It is named after a famous Egyptian professor. The library also has a Nobel Section for famous writers. In 2009, the library grew even larger. It received 500,000 books from the Bibliothèque nationale de France. This made it the sixth-largest Francophone library in the world. The Internet Archive also donated 10 billion web pages to the collection. This includes 1,000 archival films and 2,000 hours of television.

The library is more than just a place for books. It holds museums that tell many different stories. The Antiquities Museum has 1,316 artifacts, including items found under the sea. The Sadat Museum holds items from President Anwar Al Sadat. This includes his Nobel Prize medal and his personal letters. There is also a Manuscript Museum with many digital books. Students make up 80% of the people who use the library. It remains a vital place for the community in Egypt.
