Many people find it useful for business or school. In 2011, a magazine called Bloomberg Businessweek ranked it as a very useful language for work. It is also one of the six official languages of the United Nations. For more than two billion Muslims, it is the special language used in their religious services.

Writing in Arabic looks very different from writing in English. It uses a special alphabet called an abjad. Instead of writing from left to right, people write from right to left.

Long ago, the script looked different than it does today. Early writers used a script that did not have dots to tell letters apart. By the year 643 CE, the oldest surviving paper in Arabic used dots to create a 28-letter alphabet.

This helped people see the difference between similar sounds. Today, people use these dots to make reading much clearer.

Arabic has a very long and interesting history. Many years ago, different groups in the Arabian Peninsula spoke many related languages. Some of these were called Safaitic or Hismaic. Scholars think these might be early forms of Arabic.

One of the earliest known pieces of continuous Arabic poetry was written around 125 CE. Later, a famous king named Imru' al-Qays had an inscription made in 328 CE. Over hundreds of years, the way people wrote changed from old scripts into the Arabic script we see now.

In the past, scholars worked hard to make the language organized. A man named Abu al-Aswad al-Du'ali helped set rules for grammar. He also helped create a way to use marks to show different sounds.

Another scholar named Al-Khalil ibn Ahmad al-Farahidi made the very first Arabic dictionary. This book was called Kitāb al-'Ayn. These rules helped make the language a great tool for learning. Because of this work, Arabic became a major way to share science, math, and philosophy during the Middle Ages.

Because Arabic was so important for learning, it influenced many other languages. Many European languages like Spanish and Portuguese borrowed words from it.

This happened because of the long presence of Arabic culture in places like Southern Iberia. Many other languages also took words from Arabic, such as Persian, Turkish, and Swahili. Even the language Maltese grew from a dialect of Arabic. It is amazing to see how one language can leave its mark all over the world. Arabic connects many different people and cultures together through its words and history.
