Bernice Rubens was a famous writer from Wales. She was born in Cardiff in 1923. Her family loved music. Her brothers were both great musicians. One brother played in a famous orchestra. Bernice did not become a musician. Instead, she chose to write books. She was very dedicated. She made sure to write every single day.

In 1970, she won a very big prize. This was the Booker Prize. She was the first woman to win it. She is still the only writer from Wales to win this prize. Many of her books became films. Her book Madame Sousatzka was made into a movie in 1988. That story was based on her brother. He was a very talented young piano player. Her other books also became movies or TV shows. People in Wales still honor her work. A purple plaque was put on her family home in Roath. This helps people remember her great skill as a storyteller.
