She wrote many kinds of books. These included novels, short stories, and memoirs. A memoir is a book about a person's own life.

She was a master of historical fiction. This means she wrote stories about people from the past. Her most famous books are about Thomas Cromwell. He was a man who worked for King Henry VIII. This series of books is called a trilogy. More than 5 million copies of these books have been sold.

Mantel won the Booker Prize two times. This is a very big award for writers. She was the first woman to win it twice. She was also the first person to win it for a sequel. A sequel is a book that continues a story.

Life was not always easy for her. When she was young, she had a painful illness. Doctors called this endometriosis. It made her life very hard for a long time. She used her own experiences to help her writing. Mantel died in 2022 at the age of 70. She was still working on a new book when she passed away.
