Bernice Rubens was a very famous novelist from Wales. She was born in Splott, Cardiff, on July 26, 1923. Her family was filled with talented people who loved music. Both of her brothers, Harold and Cyril, were great musicians. Cyril played the violin in the London Symphony Orchestra. Her sister, Beryl, was a teacher for the viola and violin. While Bernice did not become a professional musician, she did learn to play the cello. She chose to use her talents to tell stories instead.

Writing was a very important part of her daily life. She made sure to write every single day to grow her skill. Before she was a full-time writer, she had different jobs. From 1950 to 1955, she taught at a grammar school in Birmingham. Later, she worked in the film industry making documentaries. She also studied English at the University of Wales, Cardiff. She earned her BA degree there in 1947.

Bernice reached a huge milestone in her career in 1970. She won the Booker Prize for her book, The Elected Member. This was a very big deal because she was the first woman to win it. This prize was only in its second year of existence. As of 2024, she is still the only Welsh author to win this prize. Her first novel, Set On Edge, was published back in 1960.

Many of her stories were so good that they became movies or shows. Her 1962 book, Madame Sousatzka, became a film in 1988. That story was based on her brother, Harold. He was a child prodigy who played the piano. The book also used details from his teacher, Madame Maria Levinskaya. Another book, I Sent a Letter To My Love, became a film in 1980. Her book Mr Wakefield's Crusade was even made into a BBC show in 1992.

Bernice's life and family history are very interesting. Her father, Eli Reuben, was a Lithuanian Jew. He traveled to Cardiff in 1900 to start a new life. He met Dorothy Cohen, whose family came from Poland. Bernice lived in a house in Roath with her husband, Rudolf Nassauer. In June 2024, a Purple Plaque was put on that house. This plaque helps people remember her amazing work as a writer.
