He helped collectors find and understand many masterpieces. His expert opinion could change how much a painting was worth. This made his work very important to the art world.

Berenson had a special way of looking at art. He used a method called connoisseurship to study works. He combined careful looking with a unique idea. He believed an artist's personality could be seen in their art.

He wrote many famous books about Italian painters. One major success was *The Drawings of the Florentine Painters*. He also wrote about Venetian and Central Italian artists. These books helped people learn about the Renaissance.

His life began in a place now called Lithuania. He was born Bernhard Valvrojenski to his parents, Albert and Judith. His family moved to Boston, Massachusetts, in 1875. They changed their family name to Berenson.

Bernard studied at Boston University and later Harvard University. He eventually married Mary Smith, who was also an art historian. They lived much of their lives in Italy.

Berenson's career had some difficult and controversial parts. He worked closely with a powerful art dealer named Joseph Duveen. They had a secret agreement to share money from sales. This caused a conflict of interest for some people.

In 1929, a court case in New York hurt his reputation. People questioned if his opinions were truly neutral. Despite this, he remained a major figure in art history.

Today, Berenson's legacy lives on through his home, I Tatti. This villa is located in Settignano, near Florence. He willed the estate to Harvard University. It is now a famous research center for scholars.
