Instead, he modeled the clock by carving pieces to scale from a borrowed pocket watch. This clock was a significant feat of engineering. It continued to function successfully for more than 50 years, working until his death in 1806. This demonstrates his deep understanding of mechanics and precision.

Banneker's interest in astronomy expanded significantly through his relationship with the Ellicott family. The Ellicotts were Quakers who moved to the Patapsco Falls area in 1772. In 1788, George Ellicott provided Banneker with specialized books and instruments. These included Mayer's tables, Ferguson's astronomy, and Leadbeater's lunar tables. These tools allowed him to conduct formal astronomical research during his leisure time. Using these resources, Banneker successfully calculated the timing of a solar eclipse.
