Ben Mottelson was a famous scientist. He studied nuclear physics. This is the study of the tiny center of an atom. This center is called the nucleus.

Before Ben, people thought the nucleus was like a simple drop of liquid. Ben worked with a scientist named Aage Bohr. They looked at how the parts inside the nucleus move. They found that these parts move in a special way. They found a link between the movement of single parts and the movement of the whole group. This work showed that nuclei are not always round shapes. Some are not perfect spheres.

Because of this work, Ben won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1975. This is a very big prize for science. Ben was born in Chicago. He went to school at Purdue University and Harvard. Later, he moved to Denmark. He held passports for both the United States and Denmark. He lived in Copenhagen for many years. He died in 2022 at the age of 95.
