She studied the tiny center of an atom. This center is called the nucleus. Maria found a way to explain why some nuclei are stable. She created the nuclear shell model. This model describes how parts move inside the nucleus. In 1963, she won the Nobel Prize in Physics. She was the second woman to win this prize.

Maria faced many hard times. When she moved to the United States, some schools would not pay her. They had rules against hiring married couples. This was called nepotism. Even without pay, she kept doing her work. She wrote many important papers. During World War II, she helped with the Manhattan Project. She studied how to separate types of uranium. Later, she worked at the Argonne National Laboratory. She used math to study nuclear reactors. Her ideas helped change how we see the world of atoms.
