The beluga sturgeon is a truly giant fish.

It is the largest fish found in fresh water anywhere in the world. This fish is also the third-most-massive bony fish living today.

It is famous for being a huge predator. In the ocean, it can rival the great white shark in size. The name beluga comes from a Russian word. It likely refers to the pale colors on the fish's belly and sides.

Young belugas are slender with thin, pointed snouts. Their backs are often dark grey or black. As they get older, they become heavy-set and humpbacked. Their mouths grow very large and can move forward. They also have special bony plates called scutes on their skin. These scutes actually decrease in number as the fish ages. The skin is covered in tiny scales called denticles.

Beluga sturgeons have a very interesting way of life. They are anadromous, which means they live in the sea but swim up rivers to spawn.

They enter rivers like the Danube in the autumn to stay through the winter. In the spring, they swim to find clean gravel to lay their sticky eggs. This journey can be very long for them. Males reach maturity at 12 to 16 years old. Females take a bit longer, reaching maturity at 16 to 22 years.

When they are young, they eat small things living on the river bottom. As they grow to 40 centimeters, they start eating more fish. Large adults eat a huge variety of prey. Most of their diet, about 73 percent, is made of large fish. They can even eat molluscs, crustaceans, or even young seals. They use a large, crescent-shaped mouth to suck prey in very quickly.

Sadly, these amazing fish are now critically endangered.

This is mostly because people have fished them too heavily for their roe. Roe are the eggs found inside the female. This is used to make a food called beluga caviar. One famous female was caught in 1827 in the Volga estuary. She was 4.17 meters long and weighed 1,000 kilograms. Today, people are working hard to help them. In Italy, experts are using captive breeding to try and help the population grow again.
