Young belugas are thin and dark. They have long, pointed snouts. As they grow, they change a lot. Adults are heavy and humpbacked. They have a large, wide mouth. Their skin is blue-grey or dark brown. They also have white bellies.

These fish are anadromous. This means they live in the sea but swim up rivers to spawn, or lay eggs.

They look for clean gravel to lay their sticky eggs. Most belugas can live for over 100 years.

Adults are big hunters. They eat many kinds of fish. They can even eat small seals.

Today, the beluga is critically endangered. This means they are at high risk of disappearing. People have caught too many of them for their roe. Roe are the eggs found inside a female fish. This is used to make caviar. Because of this, we must work to protect them.
