Beaver dam

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Beavers are amazing builders that change the world around them. By building a dam, they create a pond that serves many purposes. The pond protects them from predators and holds food for the winter. Because they change the land so much, they are called ecosystem engineers. They are also a keystone species, which means they are very important to their environment.

Building a dam is a big job that happens in steps. First, beavers divert a stream to lower the water pressure. They drive branches and logs into the mud to make a base. Then, they add sticks, bark, rocks, mud, and grass to build the rest.

Beavers can carry their own weight in materials. They use their teeth to cut wood and their front paws to carry mud. They can even float heavy logs through canals to move them.

Beavers have worked this way for a very long time. In the 1800s, beavers were almost gone in some places because people hunted them for fur. This caused salmon numbers to drop quickly. Today, beaver populations are making a big comeback in the United States.

Some studies show they are very fast workers. In Poland, researchers found beavers could rebuild a destroyed dam in about 8 hours.

These dams can be quite huge. Most dams are only a few meters long, but some are much larger. The largest known beaver dam is in Wood Buffalo National Park in Alberta, Canada. It is 590 meters long!

Another large dam was found in Three Forks, Montana. It is 250 meters long, 4 meters high, and 12 meters thick at the base.

Beaver ponds help many other living things thrive. The calm water acts like a nursery for young salmon and trout. It also helps frogs and toads find safe places to grow.

Dams can even help clean the water by removing extra nutrients. They also help control floods by slowing down heavy rain. This makes the water move more slowly into the ground.
