Another significant dam was found in Three Forks, Montana. That dam measures 250 meters long, 4 meters high, and is 12 meters thick at its base.
Beaver dams provide essential services to the wider environment, particularly regarding water management. They act as natural flood control systems. During heavy rains, the dam stores extra water and releases it gradually. This reduces the height of flood waves moving downstream. Despite these benefits, beaver dams can cause disruption. Flooding can damage property or wash out railroad tracks, potentially causing derailments. In Tierra del Fuego, beavers are considered a plague because they flood thousands of acres. This is because the local trees cannot regrow through coppicing like North American trees can. However, modern solutions often involve low-maintenance flow devices rather than just trapping the animals. Understanding the complex relationship between beavers and their environment helps us manage these powerful ecosystem engineers.
