Climate change is expected to increase the frequency and intensity of both droughts and rain events. In natural, undisturbed areas, floodplains help manage these changes. A floodplain is a flat area of grassland or forest near the water. It allows flood water to spread out and slow down. This helps the streambed stay stable and protects the rich biota, or living community, within the ecosystem.
Human activity can significantly alter these natural systems. In urban or suburban areas, there are many impervious surfaces. These are hard surfaces that water cannot soak into. Without natural vegetation or floodplains, high levels of surface runoff occur. This leads to more frequent flooding and watershed erosion. This can cause a process called scour, where the bed is worn down even to the bedrock.
