This layer of larger material acts like a protective shield for the bed. This process is closely tied to how water moves sediment. As water flows, it sorts different sized particles into different parts of the bed. This sorting happens because velocity changes as the water moves downstream.

Water movement creates complex shapes through erosion and deposition. Deposition is when sediment settles to the bottom. This usually occurs on the inside of stream curves where the water velocity slows down. Erosion is the wearing away of the bed. This happens on the outside of curves where the velocity is higher. This constant cycle of erosion and deposition creates winding curves called meanders.

In streams with low to moderate grades, these meanders create different features. You might find deep, slow water pools or fast, shallow water called riffles.

Rivers can also change their paths in several distinct ways. An anabranch is a type of branch where a river goes around a small island. It then rejoins the main channel later. Sometimes, a buildup of sediment causes a river to abandon its old bed entirely. This process is known as avulsion. In other cases, a braided river might form. This features small threads of water that come and go within a single main channel. Scientists use the term bathymetry to measure the depths of these riverbeds.

Climate plays a massive role in how streambeds behave over time. The amount of precipitation in an area determines how much water flows over the bed. Climate change is expected to increase the frequency and intensity of both droughts and rain events. In natural, undisturbed areas, floodplains help manage these changes. A floodplain is a flat area of grassland or forest near the water. It allows flood water to spread out and slow down. This helps the streambed stay stable and protects the rich biota, or living community, within the ecosystem.

Human activity can significantly alter these natural systems. In urban or suburban areas, there are many impervious surfaces. These are hard surfaces that water cannot soak into. Without natural vegetation or floodplains, high levels of surface runoff occur. This leads to more frequent flooding and watershed erosion. This can cause a process called scour, where the bed is worn down even to the bedrock.

Such erosion can also undercut the banks. This widens the stream and increases the amount of sediment carried downstream.
