A beat happens when two sounds play at once.

Beating Frequency

These sounds must have slightly different frequencies. A frequency is how fast a sound wave moves. When these waves meet, they interfere with each other. This creates a pattern of changing volume. The sound will get loud and then soft. This sounds like a pulse or a tremolo.

Musicians use beats to tune their instruments. They listen to the pulse between two strings. As the notes get closer, the pulse slows down. When the notes match perfectly, the beat stops. This perfect match is called unison.
