It is widely considered one of the greatest movies ever created. In a 2022 poll, critics voted it the fifty-fourth greatest film of all time. The film was produced by Mosfilm in the Soviet Union. It tells a dramatic story about a real event from 1905. During that year, the crew of a Russian battleship rebelled against their officers. This event is called a mutiny. The movie helps people feel the tension and the passion of that time.

The story follows the sailors on the ship. They are very upset because their food is rotten and full of insects. A sailor named Vakulinchuk leads the crew in a protest. After a fight breaks out, the sailors take control of the ship. They sail to the city of Odessa to find support. The film shows the people of the city helping the sailors. It also shows a very sad scene on the Odessa Steps. In this scene, soldiers march down the stairs and fire at a crowd of people. The movie uses these moments to make the audience feel strong emotions.

Sergei Eisenstein was the director and co-writer of the film. He wanted to use the movie to share a political message. To do this, he used a special way of editing called montage theory. Montage is when a filmmaker cuts different shots together in a specific order. This method can make a viewer feel sympathy for the sailors. It can also make them feel anger toward the officers. Eisenstein even used stone lions to show this idea. He showed a sleeping lion, a waking lion, and a rising lion.

By cutting these shots quickly, it looks like the lions are moving. This symbolizes a revolution waking up.

Making the film was a big job that began on March 31, 1925. Eisenstein had to work very fast because he had a tight deadline. He even changed his original plan to focus on just one main story. Instead of eight different episodes, he focused on the uprising on the Potemkin. The crew filmed in several places, including the city of Odessa. They used a real ship that was being scrapped at the time. Because the film was black and white, red colors looked black. To fix this, Eisenstein hand-tinted a flag to make it look red for the premiere.

Today, people still study this film in movie classes. It changed how directors think about editing and storytelling. The film has been restored many times to keep it looking good. In 1950, it was restored with new music by Nikolai Kryukov. Later, in 1976, it was reissued with music by Dmitri Shostakovich. Even though it is a silent film, the images tell a powerful story. It shows how art can capture history and big feelings.
