In 1897, a small group of soldiers held a post called Saragarhi.

This post was in a place called the Samana Range. It was used to send signals between two big forts. One fort was called Fort Lockhart. The other was Fort Gulistan.

On September 12, 1897, a large group of Afghan tribesmen attacked. There were many thousands of attackers. Only 21 Sikh soldiers were at the Saragarhi post. Their leader was Havildar Ishar Singh. The soldiers refused to give up. They fought to protect the nearby forts. One soldier, Gurmukh Singh, used a tool called a heliograph to send signals. He told the other forts that an attack was happening.

All 21 soldiers died in the battle. They were very brave. For their courage, they all received the Indian Order of Merit. This was a very high award.
