Baseball cards are small items that fans love to collect.

They are usually printed on cardboard, silk, or plastic. Most cards show images of baseball players, teams, or stadiums. Some cards even feature famous celebrities. Collectors find them in the United States and Puerto Rico. They are also common in Canada, Cuba, South Korea, and Japan. These places have big leagues and many fans. Collecting these cards is a way for people to share their love for the game.

Making these cards has changed many times over the years. Early cards often had an image on one side. The other side usually had an advertisement for a business. In the 1880s, cards were often put in cigarette packs. These cards helped protect the cigarettes from getting damaged. Later, companies began putting cards in packs of gum. In the 1950s, cards often came with a stick of gum. Some companies even put cards on cereal boxes or Jell-O packaging.

Baseball cards have a very long history. In the mid-19th century, baseball clubs began posing for group photos. Some of these photos were printed on small cards. The oldest known surviving card shows the Brooklyn Atlantics from around 1860. In 1868, a New York store called Peck and Snyder made cards to advertise baseball equipment. By the end of the 1800s, cards were being made in the Pacific Isles too. Japan saw sets as early as 1898, while Cuba saw them in 1909.

Many famous companies have made these cards throughout time. The American Tobacco Company made the T206 White Border Set starting in 1909. This set included the famous Honus Wagner card.

Because Wagner objected to it, very few were handed out. In 2021, one of these cards sold for $7.5 million. In the 1930s, the Goudey Gum Co. made bright, hand-colored cards.

These cards were large and included player biographies. In 1952, Topps released a set that many call the first modern set. It used full-color photos and included player statistics on the back.

Today, baseball cards are still some of the most wanted items to own. Many people look for the Mickey Mantle rookie card from the 1952 Topps set.

Even though some collectors left the hobby after the 1994-95 MLB strike, the interest remains. Companies like Topps and Panini Group still make cards for fans. You might see cards from brands like Bowman or Fleer. Whether they are old or new, these cards connect fans to the history of the sport. They turn a simple piece of cardboard into a piece of history.
