These stems can grow from the base of a plant. We call these basal shoots. Other stems grow from the roots. These are called root sprouts or suckers.

These new plants do not come from seeds. Instead, they grow from buds on the roots or base. This is a way of asexual reproduction. This means the new plant is a clone. A clone is a plant that is exactly like the parent. Each new sprout has the same genome. A genome is the set of instructions for a living thing.

Root sprouts can grow far from the main trunk. Roots often grow out 1.5 to 2 times the height of the tree. This helps plants spread to new places. Some plants like poplars spread very fast. They can make thick mats of roots. These mats help hold soil in place. People use this to stop erosion. This is when soil washes away. This helps new plants grow in the shade later. Some plants also use stolons. These are stems that grow on or under the soil. We often call these runners.
