Plants have many ways to grow and spread.

Some new stems grow from the very bottom of a tree. These are called basal shoots. Other stems grow from buds on the roots. We call these root sprouts or suckers.

These shoots do not come from seeds. They grow from special buds called adventitious buds. This is a way for plants to make copies of themselves. This is called asexual reproduction or vegetative reproduction. It helps a single plant become many plants.

This way of growing works in steps. First, a bud forms on a root or a stem. These buds are called adventitious buds. Then, the bud grows into a new shoot. If the shoot grows from the roots, it is a sucker. If it grows from the base, it is a basal shoot. These new plants are clones of the parent. This means they have the same genome. A genome is the set of instructions for a living thing. Each clone is an exact copy of the original.

Many different plants use this method to grow. Some examples include the apple tree and the cherry tree. You can also see this in guava and lilac. Other plants like the hazel and the privet do this too. The Canada thistle and the tree of heaven also use it. Even the Asimina triloba uses this way to spread. This helps these plants find new places to live and grow.

Root sprouts can travel a long way from the main trunk. Tree roots often grow out 1.5 to 2 times the height of the tree. Because of this, suckers can pop up far away. Some plants like poplars and blackthorn spread very fast. They can make thick mats of roots. These mats can cover areas cleared by logging or erosion. A famous example is a group of plants called Pando. This is a huge group of clonal aspen trees.

People can use these shoots for gardening.

Gardeners use root sprouts to grow new woody plants. They can dig them up with some roots attached. For basal shoots, people use a method called stool beds. They cut a young plant near the soil. Then, they heap soil over the cut. This helps the basal shoots grow new roots. This is a common way to grow rootstocks for apple trees.
