Banksy is a world-famous street artist, political activist, and film director based in England. He is best known for his satirical street art and subversive epigrams. These works combine dark humor with social and political commentary.

His art often appears on public surfaces like walls, bridges, and streets. Because much of his work is considered illegal graffiti, Banksy maintains strict anonymity. He has never publicly confirmed his true identity. This secrecy is a vital part of his persona and his work.

To create his art quickly, Banksy uses a distinctive stencilling technique. A stencil is a template with a design cut out of it. By using these patterns, he can apply paint to a surface much faster than freehand drawing.

He reportedly discovered this method while hiding from the police under a rubbish lorry. He noticed the stencilled serial numbers on the vehicle and realized how efficient they were. This transition from freehand graffiti to stencilling helped him become more widely noticed in Bristol and London.

Banksy's career began in the Bristol underground scene during the early 1990s. He was a member of the DryBreadZ Crew, which included artists named Kato and Tes. He was inspired by local figures like the musician and graffiti artist Robert Del Naja, also known as 3D.

During this early period, he met photographer Steve Lazarides, who became his agent. Banksy also led a different life outside of art; he was the goalkeeper for the Easton Cowboys and Cowgirls football team. In 2001, he even toured Mexico with his football club.

His artwork often features specific subjects like rats, apes, policemen, soldiers, and children. He uses these images to deliver messages that are anti-war, anti-capitalist, or anti-establishment. For example, his 1997 mural *The Mild Mild West* depicts a teddy bear throwing a Molotov cocktail at riot police.

He also creates "subverted" paintings, where he alters famous classical works. One such example adapts Monet's *Water Lily Pond* to include urban litter and a shopping trolley. These works challenge how people view traditional art and modern society.

Banksy has participated in many large-scale exhibitions and projects. In 2002, he held his first Los Angeles exhibition titled *Existencilism*. In 2003, he joined an exhibition in Sydney, Australia, which was attended by approximately 1,500 people. He also created a series of spoof British £10 notes in 2004. These notes replaced the image of the Queen with Princess Diana. While these were intended as art, the Bank of England notes hold the copyright, and reproducing their images can be a criminal offense under the Forgery and Counterfeiting Act 1981.

Speculation regarding his true identity has been intense for many years. Many reports suggest he is a man named Robin Gunningham. In 2016, researchers at Queen Mary University of London used geographic profiling to study his work. They found that the locations of his art correlated with Gunningham's movements. A 2026 Reuters investigation also linked him to Gunningham, citing a signed confession from a 2000 arrest in New York. However, Banksy's representatives have disputed these findings, and his identity remains officially unconfirmed.

Beyond visual art, Banksy is an accomplished filmmaker. He directed and starred in the documentary *Exit Through the Gift Shop*. This film made its debut at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. In 2011, the movie was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature Film. His influence extends into the digital world as well; he received the Webby Person of the Year award in 2014. Whether through a stencil on a wall or a film on a screen, Banksy continues to provoke global conversation.
