The bank has a very long and busy history. It started in 1912 under a new government. A man named Chen Jintao helped organize it. He turned an older bank called the Da-Qing Bank into this one. In 1928, the main office moved to Shanghai. The bank grew very fast after that. It opened its first office outside of China in London in 1929. It also opened offices in Osaka and Singapore soon after.

History brought many hard times and big changes for the bank. During wars in the early 1900s, many branches had to close. Some branches stayed open in New York and London. After the Chinese Communist Revolution in 1949, things changed again. Most of the bank's work moved to the People's Bank of China. The bank was re-established in 1979 to focus on international finance. This was part of a time called reform and opening up. In 2006, the bank had a very large public offering of shares. This raised billions of dollars in both Hong Kong and mainland China.

Today, the Bank of China is active on every inhabited continent. It has branches in many places like Canada, Brazil, and South Africa. In 2017, it had offices in 27 different countries and areas. Even though it is global, most of its money comes from China. In 2023, the bank worked to make pay more equal for workers. It started a plan to raise pay for some and lower it for others. This was to help with wealth inequality. The bank continues to grow and change every year.
