This basin is surrounded by many volcanic mountains. These mountains act like a natural wall around the city. Because it sits high up in the mountains, the air is much cooler than in other parts of Indonesia. To the north, you can see the Tangkuban Perahu volcano. Its name actually means "upside-down boat."

Long ago, this land looked very different. Geologists believe an ancient volcano called Mount Sunda once stood here. Two huge eruptions happened a very long time ago. The second eruption blocked the Citarum River. This turned the whole basin into a massive lake called the Great Prehistoric Lake of Bandung. Eventually, the lake drained away. This left behind very rich soil. Today, this soil helps farmers grow tea, coffee, fruit, and tobacco.

People have lived in this area for a very long time. The earliest records of the area go back to the year 1488. Even older findings show that a type of Homo erectus lived near the Cikapundung River. In the 1700s, the Dutch East Indies Company started tea plantations here. They built a road to connect the plantations to Batavia. Later, in 1906, Bandung became an official municipality. It grew into a fancy resort for wealthy people. Some people even called it "Paris van Java."

Bandung is the capital city of the West Java province in Indonesia. It sits on the western highlands of Java island, southeast of Jakarta. The city is located within a large river basin. This basin is surrounded by volcanic mountains that once provided a natural defense system.

Because of its high altitude, Bandung has one of the coolest climates of any provincial capital in Indonesia. The geography of the area is defined by the Bandung Basin. This basin includes Bandung, Cimahi, and parts of the Bandung, West Bandung, and Sumedang regencies. The main river in this basin is the Citarum. A branch called the Cikapundung River flows through the city from north to south. This river eventually merges with the Citarum at Dayeuhkolot. The basin serves as a vital source of groundwater, irrigation, and potable water for the region.

The landscape was shaped by massive geological events. The Bandung Basin sits atop an ancient volcano known as Mount Sunda. This volcano was active during the Pleistocene age. Geologists believe two large-scale eruptions occurred here. The first eruption helped form the basin itself. The second eruption, occurring around 55,000 BCE, blocked the Citarum River. This event turned the entire basin into a massive body of water called the Great Prehistoric Lake of Bandung. Eventually, the lake drained away. This process left behind fertile andisols, which are volcanic soils. These soils are found in the northern hills and are perfect for growing tea, coffee, tobacco, and fruit. In the south and east, the soil is alluvial, deposited by the Cikapundung River.

Human history in this region stretches back thousands of years. Archaeological findings suggest that a species of Homo erectus lived near the Cikapundung River. The earliest written references to the area date to 1488. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC) established plantations in the area. In 1786, a supply road was built to connect Bandung to Batavia and other cities. Later, in 1810, Governor Herman Willem Daendels ordered the construction of the Great Post Road, or De Groote Postweg. This road is located on what is now Jalan Asia-Afrika.

In 1856, Bandung became the capital of the Preanger Regencies Residency. The arrival of the railroad in 1880 helped boost local light industry. This led to a growing population, including many Chinese residents who helped run local services and businesses.

In the early 20th century, Bandung transformed into a major colonial center. The Dutch government wanted to move its capital from Batavia to Bandung. To prepare, they began building military barracks and government offices. In 1906, Bandung was granted the status of a municipality, or gemeente. The city became a popular resort for wealthy European plantation owners. This era earned Bandung the nickname "Parijs van Java," or Paris of Java.

During this time, many luxurious hotels and boutiques opened along Jalan Braga. Famous art-deco hotels like the Savoy Homann and the Preanger were constructed to serve these visitors. However, the plan to move the entire colonial capital was stopped by World War II.

Architecture in Bandung is world-renowned, especially the New Indies Style. This is a tropical version of Art Deco that blends European design with local traditions. Architect Henri Maclaine Pont was a key figure in this movement. He designed the buildings for the Technische Hogeschool te Bandung, now the Bandung Institute of Technology.

Another famous landmark is Gedung Sate. This building was designed by J. Gerber and features a small roof structure that looks like a satay skewer. The building mixes Italian Renaissance arches with Javanese pendopo structures. Other notable examples include Villa Isola, a beautiful art-deco building in the north.

Bandung has also played a massive role in global politics. In 1955, President Sukarno hosted the first Asian-African Conference in the city. This historic meeting, known as the Bandung Conference, was attended by leaders from twenty-nine independent nations. They met at the Gedung Merdeka to discuss world peace and opposition to colonialism. The resulting Declaration of Bandung helped spark nationalism and decolonization movements across the globe.

This event was the first international conference of people of color in history. It remains a significant moment in the history of the modern world.

Today, Bandung is a dense metropolitan area with over 8 million people. It has a population density of 16,500 people per square kilometer. The city is a major technology center and is recognized as a "Smart City." It uses technology and social media to help residents track traffic jams or floods. Bandung is also a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. While the city faces challenges like waste disposal and traffic, it remains a major destination for tourists. Recent developments include the expansion of Husein Sastranegara International Airport and the opening of Kertajati International Airport in 2018.
