Eventually, Islam became a major religion in many parts of the country. For many years, the Dutch ruled the islands as a colony. After World War II, Indonesia fought for its freedom. It finally became an independent nation in 1949.

Homo sapiens arrived around 50,000 BCE. Early humans left behind megalithic sites and cave paintings. Around 2000 BCE, Austronesian peoples migrated from Taiwan. By the 7th century, maritime kingdoms like Srivijaya rose to power. They were influenced by Hinduism and Buddhism through trade. Later, the Majapahit empire dominated much of the region. Islam began spreading in Sumatra and became dominant by the 16th century.

European powers arrived to control the spice trade. The Dutch established the Dutch East India Company in 1602.

This led to three and a half centuries of Dutch colonial rule. During World War II, Japanese occupation ended Dutch control. After the war, Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta proclaimed independence. This led to a war of independence against the Netherlands. The Dutch finally recognized Indonesian independence in 1949. Since then, the country has faced many political and economic shifts.

Today, Indonesia is a major global player. It has the largest national economy in Southeast Asia by GDP.

The country is a member of the United Nations and the G20. It is also a key member of ASEAN. The society is incredibly diverse. There are hundreds of ethnic and linguistic groups. The Javanese are the largest group. The national motto is Bhinneka Tunggal Ika. This means "Unity in Diversity." This motto reflects the country's religious and cultural pluralism.
