Java has a very long and interesting history. Many famous events in Indonesia happened on this island. It was once the center of strong Hindu-Buddhist empires. Later, it was home to Islamic sultanates. The island was also a key part of the Dutch East Indies. During the 1930s and 1940s, Java was the center of the struggle for independence. People have lived here for a very long time. Scientists found fossils called "Java Man" near the Solo River.
Nature on the island is very diverse and colorful. You can find tropical rainforests and coastal mangrove forests.
Life on Java is full of different cultures and languages. Four main languages are spoken by the people. These are Javanese, Sundanese, Madurese, and Betawi. Most people also speak Indonesian, which is the official language.
Java is a massive island located in Southeast Asia. It is a major part of the country of Indonesia.
The island was formed through a process called geologic subduction. This happens when the Australian Plate moves under the Sunda Plate. This movement created a long chain of volcanic mountains. These mountains form an east–west spine across the island. There are 112 volcanoes on Java in total. Of these, 35 are active volcanoes. Mount Semeru is the highest volcano on the island. Mount Merapi is the most active volcano in all of Indonesia.
Java is the most populous island on Earth. In mid-2024, the population was 156.9 million people. This number includes people from Madura. By mid-2025, the population is projected to reach 158 million. This is a huge number for such a small area. Java holds about 56% of the total Indonesian population. However, it only makes up 7% of Indonesia's total land area. The capital city, Jakarta, is located on the northwestern coast.
The history of Java is deeply connected to many different empires. It was once the center of powerful Hindu-Buddhist empires. Later, it became the home of various Islamic sultanates. Java was also the core of the colonial Dutch East Indies. During the 1930s and 1940s, it was the center of the Indonesian struggle for independence. Very old history is also found here. Scientists found "Java Man" fossils near the Bengawan Solo River. These Homo erectus fossils are about 1.3 million years old.
Java has a very diverse natural environment. The climate is tropical with high humidity around 75%. The island features tropical rainforests and coastal mangrove forests. The south coast has rocky coastal cliffs. The environment changes from west to east. The west is wet and has dense rainforests. The east has a much drier savanna environment. The mountains and highlands create isolated regions. These regions are perfect for wet-rice cultivation.
Many unique animals live in the wild parts of Java. The Javan rhinoceros is one of the rarest animals in the world. It lives in the Ujung Kulon National Park. Java also has over 450 bird species. Some birds, like the Javan green magpie, are endemic to the island. This means they are found nowhere else. Sadly, some animals like the Javan tiger and Javan elephant are now extinct. National parks help protect the remaining wildlife.
Culture and language are very important on the island. There are four main languages spoken: Javanese, Sundanese, Madurese, and Betawi. Javanese and Sundanese are the most common. Most residents are bilingual and speak Indonesian as well. The island is divided into four provinces: Banten, West Java, Central Java, and East Java. There are also two special regions, Jakarta and Yogyakarta.
Java is a place of great cultural significance. It is home to four UNESCO World Heritage sites. These include Borobudur Temple and Prambanan Temple. The Sangiran Early Man Site is also a protected location. Ujung Kulon National Park is the fourth site. These places show the long history of humans on the island. From ancient temples to early human fossils, Java connects the past to the present.
