Dieng is a high place.

Dieng is a high place in Indonesia.
It sits high up in the mountains. Clouds and mist often hide the land. People call it the land above the clouds.
Long ago, this place was a big lake. Lava from volcanoes filled the area. This made the lake dry up into plains.
Many old stone buildings are there. These are temples for worship. Some are in groups, and one stands alone.
The air is very cold there. Sometimes, frost covers the ground. This can hurt the potato crops.
Dieng is a high plateau in Central Java, Indonesia.
It is the highest plateau on the island of Java. The land sits more than 2,100 meters above sea level. Because of the high mountains, clouds and mist often hide the area. People call it the land above the clouds.
Long ago, Dieng was a large lake. Lava from volcanoes flowed out and blocked the water. Over time, dirt and sand filled the lake. This turned the water into flat plains. Today, the soil is very rich. This is because of the volcanic activity underground. People use this heat for geothermal energy. This is power made from heat deep in the earth.
Many old stone temples stand in Dieng.
These temples were built a long time ago. They were used to worship the god Shiva. The temples are in groups. Some groups are called Arjuna or Dwarawati. One temple, called Bima, stands alone.
The weather is very cold.
Sometimes, the temperature drops below freezing. This creates frost called Bun Upas. The frost can hurt potato crops. Dieng is a very big producer of potatoes.
The Dieng Plateau is a special place in Central Java, Indonesia.
This land was not always a flat plain. Long ago, it was a large ancient lake. Lava from nearby volcanoes flowed out and blocked the water. This created a dam that held the lake in place. Over a long time, a thing called sedimentation happened. This means dirt and sand filled the lake. Slowly, the water disappeared and the lake turned into plains. Today, the soil is very rich because of volcanic activity. The area even holds geothermal energy deep underground.
Many old stone temples stand on the plateau. These are some of the oldest stone buildings in Java. Most of them were built between the 8th and 9th centuries. They belonged to the Mataram kingdom era. People used these temples to worship the god Shiva. The temples are grouped into three main clusters. These are the Dwarawati, Arjuna and Gatotkaca clusters. One temple, named Bima, stands all by itself. The names of the temples come from Javanese shadow puppets.
People have been studying Dieng for a long time. H.C. Cornelius visited the area in 1814. He wrote that the plateau was still underwater like a lake. Later, Thomas Stamford Raffles visited in 1815. He reported finding around 400 ancient temples and sites.
The weather in Dieng is quite cold. The average temperature is about 14 degrees Celsius. Sometimes, the air gets so cold it drops below 0 degrees. This creates a frost called Bun Upas.
The Dieng Plateau is a unique highland region located in Central Java, Indonesia.
The landscape of Dieng was shaped by intense volcanic activity over many centuries. Originally, this area was an ancient lake. Volcanic eruptions from the surrounding mountains produced lava that flowed into the basin. This lava acted as a natural dam, trapping the water and creating a large lake. Over time, a process called sedimentation occurred. Sediment, which is material like sand and dirt, settled at the bottom of the lake. This gradual filling caused the lake to dry up, eventually turning the basin into the fertile plains seen today.
Dieng is a site of immense historical and religious importance. The name comes from Old Javanese, where "di" means place and "hyang" means ancestors or gods. This reflects the ancient belief that gods resided in high, mountainous places. During the Mataram kingdom era in the 8th and 9th centuries, the plateau served as a major Hindu religious center. Many inscriptions from this time, such as the Gunung Wule and Kapuhunan inscriptions, mention the area. These records describe the plateau as a sacred space for worship and rituals.
The architecture of the plateau reflects the Hindu cosmology of the time. The temples found here are some of the oldest stone structures in Java. Most of these buildings were dedicated to the god Shiva. This is evidenced by the many statues, yoni, and phallus carvings found by archaeologists. In Hindu belief, Shiva is often associated with mountains, such as the sacred Mount Kailash. The placement of these temples was not random. The high altitude and quiet environment provided a sacred atmosphere for rishis, or holy men, to perform rituals. The architecture was intended to be a reflection of the cosmos, acting as an axis between earth and heaven.
Archaeologists have identified several distinct clusters of temple ruins. These are organized into three regional blocks: the Dwarawati cluster, the Arjuna and Gatotkaca clusters, and the Bima cluster. The Bima temple is unique because it stands as a single, separate building. Interestingly, the names of these temples are taken from characters in the Mahabharata and Javanese shadow puppets, known as Wayang Kulit.
The climate of the plateau is a subtropical highland climate. The average annual temperature is 14.0 °C, and the region receives about 2,652 mm of precipitation each year. Because of its high elevation, Dieng can experience very cold weather. In July and August, temperatures can drop below 0 °C. This creates a phenomenon called Bun Upas, which is a layer of frost that covers the land.
Beyond its history and climate, Dieng is a source of significant natural energy. The volcanic activity beneath the surface provides geothermal energy. This energy is used for power generation in the Batur and Kejajar districts. Geothermal investigations began during the Dutch East Indies era in 1918, and by 1964, the area was recognized as a high-prospect resource. Geothermal wells are drilled to depths between 1,500 and 2,000 meters. These wells tap into steam reserves that are estimated to be around 400 MW. This makes the plateau not only a cultural treasure but also a vital part of Indonesia's energy landscape.
