The ball python is a small snake from Africa.

It lives in grasslands and open forests. These snakes are native to West and Central Africa. They can be found from Senegal to Uganda. This snake is a nonvenomous constrictor. This means it does not use venom to hunt. Instead, it uses its body to squeeze its prey. The name "ball python" comes from how it acts. When the snake feels scared, it curls into a tight ball.

It tucks its head and neck into the middle to stay safe.

There are many ways these snakes live and grow. Most ball pythons are active at night or during dawn and dusk. This is called being nocturnal or crepuscular. In the wild, they like to hide in mammal burrows. Females lay three to 11 leathery eggs. These eggs hatch after 55 to 60 days. The mother leaves the eggs once they hatch. Young males reach maturity in 11 to 18 months. Females take longer, between 20 and 36 months.

Both males and females have pelvic spurs on their sides. Males use these spurs to grip females during mating.

People have studied these snakes for a long time. In 1735, Albertus Seba described a specimen from Mozambique. Later, George Shaw suggested the name Boa regia in 1802. In 1803, François Marie Daudin proposed the name Python. This name was used for snakes that are not venomous. Finally, in 1844, André Marie Constant Duméril and Gabriel Bibron gave them their current name. This name is Python regius. The word regius is Latin for "royal."

They are the most popular pet snake in the world. In captivity, they can live for 15 to 30 years. The oldest snake on record lived for 62 years. Many breeders create "morphs" to make new colors. There are over 7,500 different morphs today.

However, some morphs like the "spider" morph can have health issues. This morph can cause head tremors or a lack of coordination.

These snakes are very important to some cultures. The Igbo people in Nigeria see them as symbols of the earth. They treat the snakes with great care. If a snake dies, some communities even give it a funeral. In Ghana, people believe pythons are saviors. Folklore says a python once helped people by turning into a log.

Today, the species is listed as Near Threatened. This is because people hunt them for the pet trade. They also hunt them for their skin and meat. Habitat loss from farming is another big problem for them.
