The pygmy hippopotamus is a rare and shy animal from West Africa.

It lives mostly in the forests and swamps of countries like Liberia. This animal is much smaller than its famous relative, the common hippopotamus. While the common hippo is huge, the pygmy hippo is only half as tall. It also weighs less than one-fourth as much as the larger version. These animals are nocturnal, which means they are mostly active during the night.

Because they like to hide, they are very hard for scientists to study in the wild.

To survive in the forest, the pygmy hippo has many special body features.

Its back slopes forward so it can move through thick plants more easily. It has longer legs and a longer neck than the common hippo. Even though it lives on land, it is still semiaquatic. This means it needs to spend time in water to keep its skin moist. Its skin can dry out and crack if it stays out of the water too long. The hippo also makes a pink liquid called hipposudoric acid. This substance acts like a sunscreen and helps protect its skin.

Scientists have spent a long time learning about how these hippos are related to other animals.

For a long time, people thought they were related to pigs. Later, researchers found that hippos are actually very closely related to whales and dolphins. This is because they share a common ancestor that lived a long time ago. The name of the pygmy hippo's group, Choeropsis, comes from Ancient Greek words. One part of the name means "pig" and the other means "resemblance."

There is also a story about a group of hippos that lived in Nigeria.

These were called the Nigerian subspecies, or C. liberiensis heslopi. A British officer named Ian Heslop collected some skulls there in the 1940s. He thought only about 30 of them were left in that area. Today, scientists believe this specific group is likely extinct. Most of what we know about pygmy hippos comes from studying them in zoos. In the wild, there are fewer than 2,500 of these animals left.

Watching a pygmy hippo live is like seeing a tiny version of a forest giant.

They spend about six hours every day looking for food like ferns and fruit. Instead of living in big groups like common hippos, they usually live alone. They might stay with just a mate or a mother and her calf. They use forest paths to move around and mark them with their tails. Even though they are small, they play a big part in their forest homes. We can learn a lot about them by looking at how they act in zoos.
