Finding food is a big job for them. They are omnivores, which means they eat plants and animals. They eat roots, bulbs, and tubers. They also eat fruit, seeds, and nuts. Sometimes they eat insects, snails, or even lizards. They use their large muzzles to sniff the soil. They also use their tusks to scrape the ground.

Red river hogs live in small groups. A group usually has one male and several females. These groups often have six to ten animals. Sometimes groups can have over 30 individuals. The male protects his group from leopards. They talk to each other with grunts and squeals. These sounds show if they are scared or happy.
