People often call them spiny-tailed lizards or dabb lizards. They live in rocky or hilly places with plenty of plants. These lizards spend most of their day basking in the warm sun. At night, they hide in safe underground chambers to sleep. They are very important to the dry lands where they live.

These lizards have a special way of staying safe and healthy. Their skin changes color depending on the season and temperature. In cool weather, they turn dark to soak up more sunlight. In warm weather, their colors become much lighter.

Most of them eat plants to get food and water. When they are born, babies eat their mother's waste. This helps them build gut flora, which are tiny living things in the belly. This flora helps them digest the plants they eat.

This describes their thick, muscular, and spiked tails. The tail is a tool for defense against predators. A lizard can swing its heavy tail with great speed. They might also hiss or show their small teeth to scare threats. When they sleep in burrows, they keep their tails near the entrance. This helps them block intruders from entering their homes.

There are many different species within this group. For example, Uromastyx aegyptia can grow quite large. Other species like Uromastyx macfadyeni are much smaller.

In Algeria, researchers found that Moroccan spiny-tailed lizards grow quickly. They add about 25 percent of their total growth every year. This fast growth continues until they are 8 or 9 years old. A female can lay between 5 and 40 eggs. These eggs take about 70 to 80 days to hatch.
