The name means "wand," "baton," or "stick." Many people see this bread as a symbol of French culture. In France, making this bread is a very special skill. It is even on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists.

This means the world values the way people make it.

Making a traditional baguette is a careful way of working. The "tradition française" style uses only four main things. Bakers use wheat flour, water, yeast, and salt. They may add a tiny bit of bean or soya flour.

Some bakers use a "poolish" to make more flavor. This is a type of pre-ferment used in artisan loaves. Bakers fold and roll the dough into its long shape. They might use a cloth called a "couche" to help it rise. Then, they bake it in special ovens.

The history of the baguette has many interesting parts. Long, stick-like breads became popular in France during the 1700s. In 1839, a man named August Zang brought steam ovens to Paris. These ovens use steam to help the crust expand. This makes the bread airy and gives it a shiny look.

The word "baguette" was used in a law in August 1920. That law said a baguette could not cost more than 0.35 francs. There are also many stories about how it started. Some say Napoleon wanted soldiers to carry thin bread in their uniforms.

There are many different types of long breads to know. A "ficelle" is a very thin loaf, like a string. A "flûte" is a tubular loaf that is twice as big. A "bâtard" is a shorter loaf shaped like a rugby ball.

In 1944, a big contest began to find the best baker. Nearly 200 bakers compete every single year. A panel of 14 judges looks at the smell and taste. The winner gets 4,000 euros and provides bread for the French president. This lasts until a new winner is chosen.

People around the world enjoy eating baguettes in many ways. In France, people eat slices called "tartines" for breakfast. They spread these with butter or jam and sometimes dunk them in coffee. You can also use them to make sandwiches or paninis.

Other countries have their own versions too. In Vietnam, they make "bánh mì" using rice flour. In Cambodia, they make a hot sandwich called "num pang." Even though they are made differently, people everywhere love them.
