A badge is a special object used to show something important. It can be a sign of a great job well done. Sometimes, a badge shows that a person has special power. This is true for police officers or firefighters. Badges can also show if you are a student or a worker. People use them to identify themselves to others. They are even used in ads to help brands grow.

Badges can be made from many different materials. Some are made of hard metal or smooth plastic. Others are soft, like leather or cloth. You might see a textile badge that is woven or sewn on. These can be attached with glue or an iron. Some badges are small buttons with a plastic coating. They often have a metal pin on the back.

Long ago, badges were as popular as fine jewelry. In the Middle Ages, some were very expensive. They were made of gold or silver. Other people wore simple badges made of lead. Some people wore pilgrim badges after a long trip. Others wore heraldic badges to show who they served. In 1483, a royal celebration gave out 13,000 badges. This was a huge number for the people living then.

Many different groups use badges today to show rank or membership. The military uses them to show a soldier's unit. Scouting groups use them to show awards. In the United States, police often wear metal badges. These are usually worn above the left chest pocket. Some badges are shaped like a shield. Others look like a star with five, six, or seven points.

Badges are also part of our modern digital world. Some people use digital badges to show new skills. This is a way to show what you have learned. In Japan, lawyers wear lapel pins to show their job. These pins help them work in a court. Some people even collect badges as a hobby. In the UK, a group for collectors has existed since 1980.
