Baby food refers to any soft or easily consumed food eaten by infants. This category excludes breastmilk or infant formula. It is specifically designed for human babies between six months and two years old.

These foods serve as a way to meet growing nutritional needs. They can be purchased ready-made from commercial producers. Alternatively, families may provide mashed table food. The primary goal is to provide textures that a baby can safely swallow.

The process of feeding a baby involves several developmental stages. Initially, babies consume liquid-style foods like pureed fruits or vegetables. These may be mixed with rice cereal, formula, or breastmilk. As the child grows, they transition to foods with small, soft lumps.

Babies do not need teeth to begin this transition. However, they lack the back molars required to grind hard food. Therefore, caregivers must mash or pre-chew pieces into manageable sizes. Around six months, babies may begin self-feeding. They might use a whole fist or a pincer grasp. The pincer grasp involves using the thumb and forefinger to pick up food.

There are two main ways to provide these foods. The first is through commercial products found in stores.

The second is through homemade preparations. Homemade food is often less expensive than store-bought options. It is appropriate when families have access to refrigeration and sanitation.

Preparing homemade food requires extra time for mincing or pureeing. Caregivers must also cook certain items separately to avoid adding salt or sugar. Some families also use a method called baby-led weaning. This involves starting babies directly on normal family food with careful supervision.

Health organizations provide specific guidelines for when to introduce solids. The World Health Organization recommends waiting until six months of age. This allows for optimal growth and development through exclusive breastfeeding. Introducing food too early, specifically before four months, carries several risks. It is associated with the development of food allergies. It also increases the risk of choking or gastroenteritis, which is a painful gut inflammation.

Early introduction can also lead to iron deficiency. If a baby eats solids too soon, they may breastfeed less frequently. This can lead to less milk production in the mother. Because iron absorption is depressed when milk touches other foods in the small bowel, early solids may cause anemia.

Nutritional requirements change as an infant matures. The World Health Organization suggests starting with small amounts of food. Infants aged 6 to 8 months should have 2 to 3 meals per day. Those aged 9 to 23 months need 3 to 4 meals plus snacks.

Carbohydrates should make up 40% of total energy initially. This should gradually increase to 55% by age two. While many toddlers meet macronutrient goals, some may lack fiber. A 2008 study showed some infants also needed more iron and zinc.

Conversely, some children exceed recommended levels of sodium, zinc, or vitamin A.

Different food groups are introduced at various times. Grains are very common, with 90% of babies aged 6 to 12 months eating them. Fruits are also widely consumed, especially apples and bananas.

Vegetables like carrots or sweet potatoes are popular among younger infants. As babies reach one year, meat and protein become more central. More than 90% of babies aged 12 to 18 months receive protein daily. This protein can come from meat, eggs, cheese, or beans. Sweet and salty foods are generally uncommon for this age group. Experts recommend using natural sugars from fruit to prevent future health issues.

Feeding practices vary significantly across different cultures. In Nigeria, the Yoruba people provide a liquid pap called eko. This is made from sorghum or maize and is poured from a mother's hand. In Tanzania, the Wagogo people drink uji, a thin millet gruel.

In some traditions, such as in Hindu ceremonies, the first solid food is a major event.

These diverse methods show how different societies manage the transition to solid nutrition. Whether through traditional gruels or modern purees, the focus remains on healthy development.
