Fodder, which is also known as provender, refers to agricultural foodstuff used specifically to feed domesticated livestock.

This category of food includes animals such as cattle, sheep, horses, pigs, rabbits, and chickens. It is important to distinguish fodder from forage. Forage is the food that animals find and eat on their own in a field. Fodder is food that humans cut and carry to the animals.

This distinction highlights the active role of farmers in managing animal nutrition.

There are many different ways that fodder is prepared and delivered to animals. Some forms consist of dried plants, such as hay or straw. Other types are preserved through fermentation, known as silage.

Farmers also use compressed and pelleted feeds, which are often called nuts or cattle cake. Other ingredients can include oils, mixed rations, or sprouted grains and legumes. Some processed feeds even include ingredients of animal origin. These may include fish meal, molasses, or yeast extract.

Even seaweed can be used as a supplement to help reduce methane emissions.

Fodder can be categorized by its source and its level of processing. Conserved forage plants like hay and silage are common staples. Crop residues, such as stover, chaff, or sugar beet waste, provide another source of nutrition. There are also compound feeds and premixes that are highly processed. Some farmers use specific items like oilseed press cake from soybeans or peanuts.

Others may use single cell protein or processed insects like maggots. This variety allows farmers to meet the specific nutritional needs of different species.

The global scale of this industry is immense and continues to expand. According to the International Feed Industry Federation, the worldwide animal feed trade produced 1.245 billion tons of compound feed in 2022. This industry has an annual growth rate of approximately 2%.

This massive production raises questions about land use. There is a debate regarding food versus feed. Some crops, such as corn (maize), can serve as food for both humans and animals. However, other crops like grassland grass are grown on land that could otherwise be used for human food crops.

Farmers must often find creative solutions to feed their animals during difficult times. Droughts can put great pressure on rangeland agriculture in semi-arid and arid regions. In Namibia, farmers have used an innovative concept called bush-based animal fodder production.

They use the woody biomass fibre from encroacher bush as a primary feed source. They add local supplements to improve the nutrients and palatability of the wood. Another method involves growing sprouted grains, such as barley, hydroponically.

This method uses less water than traditional forage and is ideal for dry conditions.

Ensuring the safety of fodder is a critical responsibility for producers and regulators. In the past, the inclusion of ruminant meat and bone meal caused the spread of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).

This disease, often called "mad cow disease," was spread through prion contamination. Because of this risk, the practice is now banned in many countries. Additionally, some animals have a lower tolerance for spoiled or moldy fodder. Toxins or poisonous weeds mixed into feed can cause sickness or death in livestock. In the United States, the Department of Health and Human Services regulates certain drugs in commercial feed.

Fodder production is deeply connected to broader systems like circular agriculture and climate change management. For example, using certain seaweed supplements can reduce methane emissions by up to 90%. Innovative farming systems aim to help producers become more profitable while addressing environmental impacts. The way we manage these agricultural resources affects everything from global trade to local food security. As the world population grows, the balance between producing animal protein and human food remains a central challenge.
