It serves as the capital of both Babol County and the Central District. The city sits within the Mazandaran province. Geographically, it is positioned between the Alborz Mountains and the Caspian Sea. It lies about 20 kilometers south of the sea coast. The Babolrud River flows past the west bank of the city. This location makes it a vital part of the northern region.

The history of Babol stretches back many centuries. The Safavid dynasty founded the city in the 16th century. They built it on the site of an ancient city called Mamtir. The name Mamtir likely comes from "Mah Mithra." In ancient beliefs, Mithra was a mediator. This figure was thought to protect creation from darkness. Later, the city was known as Barforushdeh, meaning "Market Town." In 1931, Reza Shah changed the name to Babol. This name means a city with an abundant water supply.
