The party had a famous motto. It was "Unity, Freedom, Socialism." This motto showed their goal to make a single state. They wanted all Arab people to be united and free.

The party had a very organized way of working. It used a structure that went from the top to the bottom. All contact between groups had to go through a higher level.

The National Congress was the group that elected leaders. This group also decided on the party's main rules. A group called the National Command led the party between meetings. They were the highest group for making big decisions. They also had a group called the National Consultative Council. This council included representatives from different regional branches.

The party began in Syria on April 7, 1947.

Three main people helped start it. Michel Aflaq and Salah al-Din al-Bitar led one group. Zaki al-Arsuzi led another group. These groups merged to form the original party. In 1953, the party merged again with the Arab Socialist Movement. This new group was led by Akram al-Hourani. After this merger, the party became even more successful in Syria.

In the 1954 elections, the party became very strong. It won 22 seats in the Syrian parliament. This made it the second-largest party in the country. Because of this strength, two members joined the government cabinet. Salah al-Din al-Bitar became the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Khalil Kallas became the Minister of Economics. In 1958, the party helped Syria join with Egypt. This created a new union called the United Arab Republic. However, this union ended after a coup in 1961.

Later, the party faced many hard times and fights. In Iraq, the party took power during the Ramadan Revolution. In Syria, a group of soldiers called the Military Committee took control. This group included leaders like Salah Jadid and Hafez al-Assad. These military leaders fought with the original civilian leaders. In 1966, a coup caused the party to split in two. One part was in Syria and the other was in Iraq. The party is no longer in power in any country. It left power in Syria on December 8, 2024.
