Three men helped start it. Their names were Michel Aflaq, Salah al-Din al-Bitar, and Zaki al-Arsuzi. The party had a motto. It was "Unity, Freedom, Socialism." They wanted all Arab lands to be one single state. They also wanted people to be free from outside control.

In 1953, the group merged with another group. This new group was called the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party. It became very strong in Syria. In 1958, Syria and Egypt joined to make a union. This union did not last long. It broke apart in 1961. Later, the party took power in Syria and Iraq. But the leaders had many fights. A group of soldiers took control in Syria in 1966. This caused the party to split in two. One part was in Syria and one part was in Iraq. The party is not in power in any country now. It left power in Syria on December 8, 2024.
