Aflaq studied in Paris at the Sorbonne. There, he met his friend Salah al-Din al-Bitar. Together, they started the Arab Ba'ath Movement in 1940. They wanted to bring a rebirth to Arab lands. In 1947, their group became the Arab Ba'ath Party. Aflaq was chosen as the leader. He also served as a teacher of history. In 1949, he was the Minister of Education.

Life was not always easy for him. Some leaders banned his party. Aflaq had to leave Syria for a time. He lived in Lebanon and later in Iraq. In 1968, he became a leader for the Iraqi-led party. He held this role until he died in 1989.
