Imagine you are standing in an open field. You want to point to a star in the sky. To do this, you need to know which way to turn. This is where an azimuth helps you.

An azimuth is a flat angle. It tells you a direction on a level plane. Most people start by looking at North. We call North the zero point. Then, you turn in a circle to find your spot. We measure this turn in degrees. A full circle is 360 degrees.

If you turn to the East, the azimuth is 90 degrees. If you turn to the South, it is 180 degrees. West is 270 degrees. Some people use South as their starting point instead.

Many people use azimuths every day. Sailors use them to find their way. Astronomers use them to find stars. Engineers and map makers use them too. Even people who dig for minerals use them.
