Some awards are things you wear. These are called decorations. You might wear a medal, a ribbon, or a badge.

Other awards are objects you can hold. A person might get a trophy or a plaque. Some winners get a certificate or a diploma. In sports, winners often get a cup. This is a very old tradition. The Stanley Cup is a famous example.

Awards can go to many different people. They can go to one student or one athlete. They can also go to a whole team or a whole country. Some awards come with money. This could be prize money or a scholarship for school.

Different groups give out awards. A government might give a state decoration. A private group or a person can give one too. The Nobel Prize honors work that helps society. The Pulitzer Prize honors great writing. Some awards even recognize just being part of a group. This is called a participation award.
