The Bangladesh Awami League is a major political party in Bangladesh. Its name comes from the Urdu word "Awam," which means "people." Because of this, the name can be translated as the Bangladesh People's League.

The party has been a central force in the country's history. It played a vital role in the struggle for independence from Pakistan. For much of recent history, it was one of the two most dominant parties in the nation. Currently, the party is under an activity ban by the interim government.

The party uses specific symbols to connect with the people of Bangladesh. Its most common electoral symbol is a traditional boat. This image is highly recognizable in the riverine landscape of the country.

The party flag is green with a vertical red stripe at the hoist. In the center, it features four red, five-rayed stars. These four stars represent the four fundamental principles of the party.

Members also use the slogan "Joy Bangla." This means "Victory to Bengal" or "Long live Bengal." It was originally a war cry used by the Mukti Bahini during the 1971 war.

To understand the party, one must look at its origins in East Pakistan. In 1949, Bengali nationalists felt ignored by the ruling Muslim League. They felt the government was too centralized in West Pakistan. They also faced discrimination in government jobs and the military. On 23 June 1949, they formed the East Pakistan Awami Muslim League.

Key founders included Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani, Yar Mohammad Khan, Shamsul Huq, and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The party wanted to protect the rights of the masses against the powerful feudal establishment. In 1953, the party dropped "Muslim" from its name to become a secular organization.

The party's growth was tied to the Bengali language movement. In 1952, students protested to make Bengali an official language. This movement was a turning point for Bengali nationalism.

In the 1954 elections, the Awami League joined a coalition called the Jukta Front. This alliance won a massive mandate, taking 223 out of 237 seats in East Bengal.

This victory effectively wiped the Muslim League from the local political landscape. During this time, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman served as a commerce minister in the provincial government.

Leadership by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman defined the struggle for independence. He led the party through the Six Point movement and the Non-cooperation movement in 1971.

These movements pushed for more autonomy for East Pakistan. During the Bangladesh War of Independence, many members joined the Mukti Bahini. After independence, the Awami League won the first general elections of the new nation. However, the party faced a difficult period after the August 1975 coup. Many leaders were jailed or executed, and the party was moved to the political sidelines.

In 1981, Sheikh Hasina became the president of the party. She is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Under her leadership, the party fought against the regime of Hussain Muhammad Ershad. After democracy was restored in 1990, the party returned as a principal political player. The Awami League won several general elections in 1996, 2008, 2014, 2018, and 2024. During the period from 2009 to 2024, the party held sole dominance over the political system. Some observers described this era as authoritarian or dictatorial.

Recent events have fundamentally changed the party's status. In August 2024, a Student-People's Uprising overthrew the government.

Since then, the party has remained underground. On 10 May 2025, the interim government banned all Awami League activities under the Anti-Terrorism Act. This ban includes activity in cyberspace. On 12 May 2025, the Election Commission suspended the party's registration. The ban will remain until the International Crimes Tribunal completes its trials. The party's history remains deeply connected to the very identity of the state of Bangladesh.
