Agha Muhammad Yahya Khan was a Pakistani general who served as the third president of Pakistan.

He held this position from 1969 to 1971. During his presidency, the country functioned under martial law. Martial law is a situation where the military takes control of the government. This period was a turning point for the nation. His leadership oversaw a civil war and a genocide in East Pakistan. These events eventually led to the secession of the province. This means East Pakistan broke away to become the independent nation of Bangladesh.

Khan's military career began long before he became president.

He was commissioned into the British Indian Army on July 15, 1939. During the Second World War, he served in the Mediterranean theatre. His service included duties in Iraq, North Africa, and Italy. While in Italy, he was captured by Axis forces. He was held in a prisoner of war camp. He eventually escaped after his third attempt. After the partition of British India in 1947, he joined the newly formed Pakistan Army. He held the rank of major at that time.

As he rose through the military ranks, Khan took on many important roles.

In 1954, he worked on a planning board to modernize the army. He later commanded two infantry divisions between 1962 and 1965. During the 1965 war with India, he was the commander of the 7th Infantry Division. In October 1966, he was appointed the fifth commander-in-chief of the Pakistan Army.

As commander-in-chief, he began reorganizing the military structure. He helped create new corps headquarters to improve how the army communicated. He also oversaw the introduction of Chinese T-59 tanks to replace older American models.

Political unrest in the late 1960s changed the course of his career.

Massive protests broke out across the country against the government of President Ayub Khan. These protests were driven by a desire for more democratic rule. To manage the crisis, Ayub Khan requested that Yahya Khan take control. On March 26, 1969, Khan declared martial law across the entire nation. He suspended the 1962 constitution and dissolved the existing parliament. He dismissed civilian officials to establish a military government. His administration included several high-ranking military officers in key roles.

One of the greatest challenges Khan faced was the division between West and East Pakistan. West Pakistan was dominated by Punjabi, Pashtun, and Mohajir peoples. East Pakistan had a population that was largely ethnically Bengali. In December 1970, Khan held the country's first general election.

The Awami League, a party from East Pakistan, won a national majority. However, Khan refused to transfer power to the party's leader, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This decision caused massive civil disobedience and protests in the east. Many people in East Pakistan began calling for complete sovereignty.

In March 1971, the situation escalated into violent conflict.

Khan ordered a military crackdown known as Operation Searchlight. This operation was intended to suppress Bengali nationalism. Instead, it initiated a genocide and a civil war in the east. Khan is often identified as a chief architect of this genocide. He was assisted in these actions by deputies Abdul Hamid Khan and Tikka Khan. The violence led to widespread death and the displacement of many people. This conflict fundamentally changed the political landscape of South Asia.

By late 1971, the conflict expanded into a larger regional war. Khan ordered pre-emptive strikes against the Indian Army, which was allied with the Mukti Bahini.

This resulted in another war with India. The simultaneous wars led to the surrender of Pakistani forces in the east. Consequently, East Pakistan successfully seceded from the country. Following these losses, Yahya Khan resigned from his military command. He also transferred the presidency to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. His era is viewed as a national tragedy in Pakistan and a period of immense loss in Bangladesh.

After his presidency, Khan lived under house surveillance for several years. He was eventually released in 1979 by Fazle Haq. He died the following year in the city of Rawalpindi. He was buried in Peshawar, where his family had deep roots. His brief time in power remains a pivotal subject for historians. The division of the country remains one of the most significant events of the 20th century. His refusal to respect the 1970 election results is seen as the primary cause of the nation's disintegration.
