This victory effectively wiped the Muslim League from the local political landscape. During this time, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman served as a commerce minister in the provincial government.

Leadership by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman defined the struggle for independence. He led the party through the Six Point movement and the Non-cooperation movement in 1971. These movements pushed for more autonomy for East Pakistan. During the Bangladesh War of Independence, many members joined the Mukti Bahini. After independence, the Awami League won the first general elections of the new nation. However, the party faced a difficult period after the August 1975 coup. Many leaders were jailed or executed, and the party was moved to the political sidelines.

In 1981, Sheikh Hasina became the president of the party. She is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Some observers described this era as authoritarian or dictatorial.

Recent events have fundamentally changed the party's status. In August 2024, a Student-People's Uprising overthrew the government.

The party's history remains deeply connected to the very identity of the state of Bangladesh.
